Applications

Controlling high-power TEC (Peltier) modules to achieve high temperature stability at high efficiency — including laser-diode temperature control, optical transceivers, butterfly-packaged laser modules, scientific instrumentation, semiconductor process equipment, medical imaging, and precision thermal management systems.

Description

A Thermo-Electric Cooler (TEC), also called a Peltier device, is a solid-state semiconductor that cools or heats a thermal load by adjusting the magnitude and polarity of the current flowing through it. The TEC24V series is a family of three high-voltage, high-current TEC controllers specifically designed to manage the operation of a TEC, maintaining the target object's temperature within a precise range around a set value. This high level of temperature control is achieved by adjusting both the direction and magnitude of the current supplied to the TEC.

All three variants operate with a DC input voltage between 5.5V and 24V, deliver up to ±6A (TEC24V6A) / ±10A (TEC24V10A) / ±15A (TEC24V15A) of output current with an output voltage range of 0 to ±23.5V, and use a PWM-smoothed continuous output current driver achieving >92% efficiency at full load. Thermal pads underneath the module allow it to dissipate heat through inner PCB layers; no external heat sink is needed for output currents up to 8A. The APID variants add a built-in Auto-PID compensation network so no manual loop tuning is required, while the base D variants use a conventional analog compensation network for fixed thermal loads.

All three variants share a single universal evaluation board, the TEC24V15AEV2.2, which lets you tune the compensation network, set output limits and verify performance across the whole family from one board.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TEC24V series?

The TEC24V series is a family of three high-voltage TEC controllers from Analog Technologies — TEC24V6A (±6A), TEC24V10A (±10A) and TEC24V15A (±15A). All share a 5.5–24V DC supply range, 0 to ±23.5V output voltage envelope, >92% efficiency and ±0.001°C temperature stability in an identical 36×36×8.2 mm DIP package; they differ only in maximum output current.

How do I choose between TEC24V6A, TEC24V10A and TEC24V15A?

Match the maximum output current to your TEC's current requirement (with about 20–30% margin). At 24V supply the three variants drive TECs up to roughly 140W (TEC24V6A), 235W (TEC24V10A) and 350W (TEC24V15A) when operating near full output. The same evaluation board (TEC24V15AEV2.2) supports all three, so you can prototype with one and switch the controller without changing the board.

What is the difference between the D and DAPID variants?

The D suffix (e.g. TEC24V10AD) denotes the standard DIP-package controller with traditional analog compensation that the user tunes manually for the thermal load. The DAPID suffix (e.g. TEC24V10ADAPID) adds built-in Auto-PID firmware that automatically tunes the compensation loop, eliminating manual tuning. Both share the same electrical performance and DIP package.

What temperature stability can the TEC24V series achieve?

When paired with a suitable temperature sensor and a properly designed thermal load, all three variants of the TEC24V series achieve better than ±0.001°C temperature stability.

Which temperature sensors does the TEC24V series support?

All three variants support thermistors (NTC), RTDs and temperature-sensor ICs. The sensor type is selectable to match the application.

Does the TEC24V series require an external heat sink?

No external heat sink is required for output currents below 8A. For higher currents (relevant for TEC24V10A above 8A and TEC24V15A above 8A), an external heat sink is recommended to keep the controller's internal temperature below 85°C. All variants include thermal pads underneath that can be soldered to inner PCB layers as a built-in heat sink.

When will the TEC24V series be available for purchase?

All three variants are currently in pre-release. Please contact Analog Technologies at sales@analogti.com for sample requests, expected release date and OEM pricing.
