How do I choose the right TEC controller?
Start with three numbers from your TEC module: rated current, rated voltage, and required temperature stability. Pick a controller whose maximum ITEC and VTEC both meet or exceed those ratings, confirm your supply exceeds VTEC by ~1 V of headroom, choose the package for your board, and decide between manually-tuned analog control and self-tuning auto-PID.
What's the difference between analog and auto-PID controllers?
Analog controllers (TECA1, TEC5V4A, TEC5V6A, TEC14M) use a compensation network you tune on the evaluation board to match your load. The high-power family (TEC48V10A through TEC9V7A) ships with embedded auto-PID firmware that self-tunes against the load, with the option to fall back to analog compensation.
What supply voltage does my TEC need?
The controller can only apply up to its rated VTEC, and needs the supply above that. Set VVPS ≥ (required TEC voltage) + ~1 V headroom; if your operating point is near a class ceiling, step up to the next voltage class.
Do I need a heat sink on the controller?
The hot side of the TEC must reject both the pumped heat and the controller's input power: Qh = Qc + Pin. Most DIP/SMT high-power units run without a heat sink below about 8 A; above that, add a heat sink sized for the total Qh.
Where should I mount the temperature sensor?
Place the NTC thermistor on the cold plate within about 5 mm of the load — not on the TEC ceramic. Sensing the ceramic reads the pump surface rather than the object and destabilizes the loop.
DIP or SMT — which package?
For highest reliability and the best heat-sinking path, choose DIP where board space allows — the package makes direct contact with a metal case. Pick SMT for high-density boards; the Micro TEC14M5V3R5AS is SMT-only with a bottom thermal pad.
Which evaluation board do I need?
TECEV104 for the analog DIP series (TECA1 / TEC5V4A / TEC5V6A), TEC14MEV1.0 for the Micro TEC14M, and the universal TEC24V15AEV2.2 for the high-power auto-PID family — it replaces the legacy TEC28V15AEV1 / EV2 and TECEV103.
