Failure rate of thermoelectric cooler in the process of thermo-cold cycling

In working process, many thermoelectric coolers (TECs) refer to temperature increasing and declining periodically. Sometimes, this cycle can occur in the very wide temperature range. Although there is no clear boundary between cycle and non-cycle working conditions, in general case, if there are working conditions that can keep temperature regularly increasing and declining continuously, which is called thermo-cold cycling. These working conditions of the cycle generally trend to be controlled by automation or machine.

In the process of thermo-cold cycling, the failure rate is related to more than four factors:

(1)Total cycle times

(2)Total temperature range

(3)Upper limit of temperature

(4)Temperature rate

When the cycle number is few, the temperature range is narrow, the upper limit of temperature is relatively low and temperature rate is very low, the high reliability and long service lifetime can be obtained. It is noteworthy that absolute lifetime mostly depends on the total cycle times, but not the total time needed for this cycle. In the thermo-cold cycling, different types of TECs have different effects on failure rate. Larger maximum operating temperature has longer service lifetime.
